King Charles I, second of three, but only surviving son of James I, became King of England and of Scotland on his father's death in 1625. Civil War broke out in 1642 and by 1647 the King was defeated and imprisoned at Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight. He was taken to London in 1649 and there condemned and executed.

This Crown coin was issued from the Tower of London early in the reign. After the civil war broke out in 1640, Royalist mints were established in several Western and Northern towns. The words inscribed around this coin are CAROLVS D G MAG BR FR ET HI REX which translates as "Charles by the grace of God King of Great Britain France and Ireland". On the reverse is CVLTORES SVI DEVS PROTEGIT meaning "God protects his worshippers".

This coin has been cast in lead-free pewter and plated in 22K Gold.
